# Drafting & Editing
Every edit category the Word Add-In can generate, uploading a context precedent, iterating through follow-ups, applying edits with comments and everything in between.
## Overview
Draft something new
Generate a clause, section, or document from a blank instruction, your own notes, or an attached precedent.
Edit what's already there
Rewrite, replace, insert into or delete from your existing text.
You don't need to tell Jurisphere which of these you're doing. It reads your instruction and the state of your document (and your [**Whole Document** / **Selection Only** scope](/jurisphere-word-add-in/core-features/ask-juris.md#setting-your-scope)) to work out which applies. In practice, most real sessions do both in the same conversation: draft a clause from scratch, then immediately follow up asking to adjust it, see [Iterating through follow-ups](/jurisphere-word-add-in/core-features/ask-juris.md#iterating-with-follow-ups) below.

### The four edit categories
Every edit Jurisphere proposes, whether you asked it to draft, rewrite, fix or remove something, is labeled with one of four categories, so you always know exactly what kind of change you're looking at before you click **Apply**.

**Adds new text at a specific location in the document**, nothing existing is touched or removed.
Try asking:
> "Add a force majeure clause after the Termination section covering pandemics, natural disasters and government actions."
> "Insert a defined term for 'Confidential Information' in the Definitions section and make sure it covers technical, financial and customer information."
> "Add a notice provision specifying that all notices must be in writing and delivered by email with read receipt or by courier."
Insertions are the right category whenever your document is *missing* something entirely, such as a clause that was never there, a defined term that was used but never actually defined, a signature block, a schedule reference.

**Removes text that's redundant, problematic, or no longer needed**, without replacing it with anything.
Try asking:
> "Delete the non-compete clause in Section 12. It's not enforceable in this jurisdiction and shouldn't be in the final version."
> "Remove the duplicate confidentiality obligation in Section 9.3. It repeats what's already covered in Section 4."
> "Delete all placeholder text in square brackets that's still in this draft. I've finalized those terms separately, listed below: \[list the finalized values]."
Be as specific as possible with deletions. Typing "remove the confidentiality clause" is ambiguous if your document has confidentiality language in more than one place (a general obligations section *and* an IP clause, for instance).

**Restructures or rephrases a section while preserving its intent**, the substance stays the same, but the language, structure or balance changes.
Try asking:
> "Rewrite Clause 8.2 so the termination rights apply mutually to both parties, not just the Vendor."
> "Rewrite the indemnity clause in plain English for a client who isn't a lawyer, without changing what it actually obligates them to do."
> "Rewrite the limitation of liability clause to cap aggregate liability at 12 months' fees, and carve out gross negligence, fraud and willful misconduct from the cap."
Rewrite is the category to reach for when the underlying idea of a clause is right but its execution isn't one-sided obligations, unclear drafting, the wrong tone for the audience or a structure that's grown messy across several rounds of negotiation.

**Substitutes existing text with revised language**, typically a more surgical, find and swap kind of change than a full rewrite.
Try asking:
> "Replace all references to 'Vendor' with 'Service Provider' throughout this agreement."
> "Replace the governing law clause with one specifying the laws of Delaware and exclusive jurisdiction of the Delaware Chancery Court."
> "Replace '30 days' with '15 days' everywhere it appears as a cure period in this agreement."
Replace tends to produce a tighter, more predictable difference than Rewrite. It is useful for defined term swaps, jurisdiction changes, updating a single figure or date that appears in more than one place.

### Reviewing and acting on a suggested edit
Every suggested edit arrives as its own card in the panel, a plain language summary of the change, and inline citations back to the part of your document it concerns. Beneath it sit up to four actions:

### Show in Document
Jumps your cursor to the exact location in Word where the edit would apply, without changing anything. Use this before deciding on anything you're not already looking at, especially for a Rewrite or Deletion, where seeing the surrounding paragraph matters.

### Apply
Makes the change directly in your document in redline/track mode.

### Apply with Comment
Accessed via the dropdown menu next to the Apply button. This option does everything Apply does, but lets you add your own note into the margin comment alongside Jurisphere's explanation.
This is useful when you want to record why you accepted the change, flag it for a colleague's attention or note a follow-up action.

### Dismiss
Discards the suggestion entirely, with no trace left in your document. Use this for anything irrelevant to what you're trying to do.
You can click “restore” to revert to the suggestion and apply it, if you change your mind.

### Iterating through follow-ups
A first suggestion is rarely the final version and you don't need to start a new conversation to refine one. Jurisphere keeps the full context of everything asked and applied so far in the thread, so each follow-up builds directly on the last. You can ask up to 20 questions in one chat.

Type in the follow up query box:
> "Make it mutual, and add a cap equal to the contract value."

### Keep Iterating until you get the satisfied result
Add an exception, if you'd like

These rows exist to show *how specific to be*, not to be an exhaustive menu. Describe what you need the way you'd brief a colleague - the type of provision, who it should favor and any figures that matter. Jurisphere will then draft or edit accordingly.
