# Creating Custom Skills

Jurisphere’s **Create Skill** feature allows you to build repeatable processes that suit your exact needs. These skills can help you curate the exact steps taken by the tool in processing your documents and generating answers. Skills are also a great way to unlock the drafting capabilities on the Document Review tool.

On Jurisphere, you can create a skill in two ways:

1. **Import from a File** (*Recommended*) - upload a document template and Jurisphere will automatically extract its structure, format, and style to build the skill for you.
2. **Start from Scratch** - define the instructions, format and the style yourself.

{% hint style="info" %}
Your created skills will appear under “**Personal**” in the **Skills** tab of the Workflows library.
{% endhint %}

### Accessing the Create Skill Modal

From the left navigation pane, click the Workflows icon to open the Skills Library. In the top right corner, click <mark style="color:blue;background-color:blue;">**+ New Skill**</mark>.

<figure><img src="/files/gqvNbonz0GQj6ygNTMut" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

This will open the **Create New Skill** modal, allowing you to choose your preferred method of proceeding, either by importing from a file or starting fresh.

### Option 1: Import from a File *(Recommended)*

This option is ideal when you have a prior draft, template, or document whose structure, tone, and style you want the skill to replicate:

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### **Upload or Select the Template**

After selecting Import from a File, the Import a Skill modal opens. You have two sub-options:

* **Upload a File** - drag and drop, or click Choose Files to upload a PDF or DOCX (up to 50 MB).&#x20;
* **Import from Library** - select a document you have already uploaded to your Jurisphere library.

{% hint style="success" %}
No anonymisation needed as Jurisphere will read and adapt the structure, headings, and tone automatically.
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/SDPVBnk2mUIcqtNwykTy" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### **Confirm and Import**

Your uploaded file will be shown with options to **Reupload** or **Delete** it if needed. When ready, click **Import**.

{% hint style="info" %}
The skill extraction can take between 30 to 60 seconds.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### **Review, edit, and configure your Skill**

* Once extraction is complete, the Create new Skill editor opens, pre-populated with the extracted content. You can review and edit every field before saving. See the Skill Configuration Fields section below for a full description of each field.
* Give your skill a clear title. This helps improve auto-suggestion while typing in the Document Review prompt box.
* You can also <mark style="color:blue;">**share your skill with your organization**</mark> or tag it for easier identification.

{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Option 2: Creating a Skill from Scratch

This option is best when you want to define a brand-new task that is not based on an existing document. It is useful when you:

* Have instructions that aren’t tied to a specific past document (e.g., draft review, **improving&#x20;**<mark style="color:purple;">**clauses in agreements**</mark>**, flagging&#x20;**<mark style="color:red;">**inconsistencies in evidence**</mark>, etc)
* Want to define a new drafting style or structure (e.g., for recording emails, pricing letters, etc)

After selecting **Start from Scratch**, the **Create new Skill** editor opens with all fields blank for you to fill in.

### Skill Fields

Whether you import from a file or start from scratch, you will edit your skill in the same editor. Here is what each field does:

1. **Skill Title** *(required)***:** Give your skill a clear, descriptive name (e.g., "Bail Application under Section 437 CrPC").&#x20;
2. **Instructions** *(required)*: Enter the exact instructions the tool should follow when running this skill. This can be as detailed as needed, including legal context, structure requirements, or content rules.

{% hint style="success" icon="pencil-line" %}
Refer to our [Prompting Guide](/resources/prompting-guide.md) or use our [Prompt Enhancement](https://jurisphere.gitbook.io/jurisphere-guide/resources/prompting-guide/prompt-library#prompt-enhancement) feature for the best way to structure your instructions.
{% endhint %}

3. **Format**: Specify how the output should be structured (e.g., numbered lists, bullet points, tables, sections, etc).
4. **Style**: Define the tone and voice of the output.
   * **Tone** - describe the register and approach (e.g., formal, deferential, structured)
   * **Voice** - describe the point of view and level of assertiveness expected in the draft
5. **Skill Description:** Write a short description of what the skill does. This appears on the skill tile in the library and helps you understand what the skill is for before running it.
6. **Ideal Input:** List the types of documents or inputs the skill works best with (e.g., FIR, charge sheet, employment agreement, etc). This helps you know what files to select when running the skill.
7. **Tags & Sharing**: Add up to two tags and decide if you want to share the skill with your organization.
8. **Assistant Tools**: In the right panel of the editor, you can configure which tools are active when the skill runs:

| Tool                     | Description                                                                                                                                                                                           |
| ------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Research** | Enables access to legal databases, repositories, and web search. |
| **Drafting** | Enables generation of the output in a live, [editable draft pane](https://jurisphere.gitbook.io/jurisphere-guide/drafting-on-document-review#enabling-drafting-mode) on the right side of the screen. |
| **Deep Mode** | Enables comprehensive multi-step analysis with a deeper reasoning process. |
| **Require Context File** | When toggled on, the skill will require you to upload a file. |

### Editing and Deleting Custom Skills

1. Navigate to **Workflows** from the left navigation pane.
2. Find the skill you want to modify. You can search or filter by category.
3. Hover over the skill tile - edit and delete buttons will appear.
4. Click the **edit** icon to reopen the skill editor, or the **delete** icon to remove it.
5. The [prompt enhancement](https://jurisphere.gitbook.io/jurisphere-guide/resources/prompting-guide/prompt-library#prompt-enhancement) feature can even be used to edit your custom skill.

{% hint style="warning" %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.jurisphere.ai/creating-custom-skills.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
