### Type in your Research Query

You can use natural language, just like how you would speak to a colleague or pose a question to a junior.

You can make your research request more specific by including:

* The jurisdiction.
* The applicable statute.
* A specific section.
* The court or tribunal.
* The legal issue.
* Relevant facts.
* The purpose for which you need the research.

For example:

> Find recent Supreme Court and High Court decisions on post termination non-compete clauses in India. Focus on cases where an employer sought to restrain a former employee from joining a competitor.

Use the voice transcription/mic button at the bottom right to dictate your query into the tool.

You can also use our Prompt Enhancement feature to make your instructions more detailed.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Attach Documents for Context

If your research question relates to a particular matter, attach the relevant documents. The documents help provide factual context for your research question.

Clicking on '**Attach**' opens the file pane on the left, from which you can choose uploaded documents for context.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Select Research

Select <img src="https://3330719282-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2zbn28n79AjHkgxNqfPb%2Fuploads%2FWa59eOxM7EdKso1hWm42%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=2e08f8d5-a542-4055-b300-811e94387b73" alt="" data-size="line"> from the prompt box options.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Select the Relevant Research Databases

Click the Settings <img src="https://3330719282-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2zbn28n79AjHkgxNqfPb%2Fuploads%2Ff9LthmWUnbQUtz9ZTxiM%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=99b7a71a-1580-4e02-b3d2-7bc16b2e57e8" alt="" data-size="line"> icon to open the available Jurisphere Research Databases and select the ones relevant to your research query.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Review the Response

After Jurisphere responds, you can:

* Verify sources through the inline citations and the **view sources** tab.
* Click a citation to open the source document in the left viewer pane (for external sources, in a new browser tab). Use View Source button towards the bottom to open the original judgment as a PDF and download it via your browser.
* **Download** or **copy** the response from the bottom of the output. You can choose to download with or without in-line citations as a Word (.docx) file.
* Ask a **follow-up** query to continue and refine your research.
* **Import** the response directly into a folder on the platform for reference in the matter or other tasks.
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Continue the Conversation

Ask follow-up questions to clarify an issue, narrow scope, request additional authorities, focus on a particular argument or ask Jurisphere to explain a case or provision in more detail.

Each follow-up is aware of the full output history, so you don't need to repeat yourself. A research thread supports up to **30 questions in total** and remains contextually aware throughout. Jurisphere also suggests follow-up questions under each response, click any suggestion to continue the thread faster.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Limitations

* Research is a **starting point**, not a substitute for independent human legal research or a final legal opinion.
* **Query refinement** may still be required, even with Prompt Enhancement, the tool may ask clarifying questions to give you the most relevant results.
* Research helps you triangulate between sources, it does not provide definitive legal advice.
* Research is **not a substitute** for a dedicated online legal database for legislation, regulation and statutory research.
* Response length keeps the answer focused to the query asked. If you need a broader survey, ask a targeted follow-up rather than expecting a single exhaustive answer, since the tool prioritises relevance over volume.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.jurisphere.ai/ask-juris/research-with-ask-juris.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
